Weekend Life

This is in the “how-not-to-run-an-estate-sale” category. Okay, this sale is on my street and has run for two weekends. I went last weekend for a bit. Well, yesterday was the last day of the sale, day six, and there was still a lot of the original items here! That’s crazy. And a big red flag.

Additionally there were no notifications of 25% off or 50% off. Nothing. I asked one of the ladies if there were any discounts today and she said “It depends on the item.”

Hmmm. Okay. That’s the problem. This why a lot of this stuff is still here. You aren’t really willing to deal and get rid of stuff. And frankly some of it is “fill a bag” at best.

Well I was mildly interested in a quirky necklace of stamped tin pieces and beads though it was not the best quality. Well, they had it marked for $10 and the gal in that room wouldn’t give me a discount. She said “Oh, that’s a good price. Look at all those beads, etc. etc.” So I set it aside and looked through the rest of the house.

In the end I decided against the necklace. I wasn’t in love with it. It was fun, but not great. I told the lady I was taking a pass and she said “Oh, I can do a discount.” Okay, so NOW you can do a discount?! But even then she still didn’t tell me what kind of discount. Was she reducing it to $8? $7? $5? And by that point I was no. Just no. I’m done. If she would have offered a discount upfront, I probably would have bought it. But the fact that on day six of a lackluster sale they still weren’t doing much dealing. I’m out.

Plus I realized that some price tags had initials on them and it dawned on me that some of the stuff here was likely from other sales or sources. So instead of pricing items so they will sell, they bring it along, sale after sale.

On a happier note, on Saturday night hubby and I were joined by our eldest for a free concert in a nearby park. The group was a tribute band for Fleetwood Mac (called Fleetwood Mask) and has been endorsed by their drummer! And dang they are good. And so much fun!

Lately at every concert I say I’m not going to dance. I don’t why. Because in the end the group starts a song I particularly like and I say “I’m going up!!” And I stay up there for several songs doing my little shimmy with arms and hips thrown akimbo and feet tamping it out. I have a blast. I sometimes wonder how King David of the Bible danced…because he seemed like he was all in!!

Anyway Sunday night included a lasagna dinner (not homemade, alas, and not a patch on my mom’s), an episode of “House of the Dragon” and three Etsy sales. Not a bad ending to the weekend.

Hope your weekend was good too!

  1. How could you know if you wanted to pay the discount price if you didn’t know what it was? That is crazy. I’ve only seen it here once where something is carried on to the next sale. I know that there wouldn’t be two of the same color, age, etc. Hermes typewriter. They never allowed it to be discounted. Maybe the company bought it themselves and bring it out at every sale, hoping for the right buyer. I’ve not been to, or see ads for, any sales where the second or last day wasn’t 50% or 75% off.

Was it a professional estate sale company? Around here the ones heirs hold aren’t very good. They want too much. Maybe sentimental attachment. It’s just your great aunt’s kitchenware and towels!

    1. Hi Lisa. It was a professional company, but I’m thinking one that deals in more humble homes. And honestly I was so surprised that by day 6 they were not advertising discounts. I’ll be willing to bet the house is still full of stuff.
