A Few Good and Quirky Finds

I was so excited to do a little sourcing last week because I’ve limiting myself in an effort to get caught up on backlogged inventory. But even when I do go out hunting I’m keeping a tight rein on my buying. No going overboard! In the end I got just a few things.

From my neighborhood thrift store

For some reason I like buying cutting boards. Maybe because they are both useful and pretty and people buy them. I thought these two like-new cutting boards (no cut marks) were so attractive and BINGO they’re signed David Levy pieces. When I got them home I disinfected the tops with 3% hydrogen peroxide and once dry conditioned them with food-grade Boos Mystery Oil.

Levy sells these on Etsy in trios! Since these aren’t vintage (and not handmade by me) I’ve put my two on eBay. (Listed for $50.)

This lightweight wood letter caddy is by Selamat Designs, San Francisco, a now defunct company who once specialized in Southeast Asian imports. I cleaned it up and applied a beeswax wood polish to condition it. Of course nowadays many of us use auto pay for bills and we rarely receive bills or letters. So how about using it as a holder for napkins and silverware?

Total paid: $14.67

From my local flea market

I love going to our small monthly flea market just up the road. It’s a manageable size with enough folks selling vintage stuff to make it worth my while. But last Saturday it took me forever to find anything to buy. One older couple brought all the interesting stuff below along with tons more but the quoted prices were full retail. She encouraged me to create a bundle for a better price, but I knew I’d still be paying too much.

I may keep this one for myself…at least for a while!

Finally at someone else’s table I found two studio pottery pieces. They were nice, but nothing rare or valuable.

Later as I was perusing a blanket with assorted items the daughter said “Everything on there’s a dollar.” Now we’re talking!!! And I found three fun, unexpected bits: a vintage Loto game from Portugal, a wood shelf/tray made from an old Bay Side Canning company box and what I think could be a wool French military medic cap.

Total paid: $18.

It’s rather ironic that the things I am most excited were only $1 each! Well, my “sourcing itch” has been scratched for a bit. Now back to listing.

Wishing you happy hunting!

Karen
