“Leaving on a Jet Plane”

Today is mostly going to be a day of prep for my upcoming flights tomorrow. (The older I’ve gotten, the more I dread airplane travel. It just seems ridiculously uncomfortable and tedious–at least it is in steerage class!) So I’ve checked in, printed my tickets (yes, I’m a Luddite), paid for the one bag I’ll check in, and downloaded the American Airlines app so I can watch free movies while in flight. I’m now charging up my “travel” laptop (an old MacBook) and planning my wardrobe.

On the vintage biz front, I’ll be putting my Etsy store on “vacation mode” for a few days. It’ll be nice to not have to deal with it. Though I am looking forward to doing a little antiquing while in Tennessee visiting my brother and father. Surprisingly even antique malls in rural areas can have hefty prices, but still my bro and I have a great time looking. We are repeat shoppers at Rivermill Antique Mall and Antiques Outlet Mall both in Walland, TN. Last time we asked for restaurant recommendations and were directed to Becky’s Grocery and Grill some miles up a twisty mountain road. It is obviously a fav local hangout and while humble in appearance served some delish diner food. (I don’t have high hopes for finding inventory on this trip, but I’ll leave room in my bag anyway, in case I get lucky!)

No major scores at my neighborhood thrift store lately either, but I did find a few nice bread-and-butter things. Items that I think would make nice holiday gifts.

I rarely pick up these paper mache lacquered boxes from India. While pretty, they are common and tend not to resell for much. But this one was a lidded jar lined in brass, likely for tobacco or tea storage. This was one to buy.

I also found this Belleek porcelain shell creamer (4th date mark,1946-1955) and thought “what a lovely, delicate thing.” And I knew I was going to buy it even though Belleek doesn’t sell for me and creamers have been dead in the water for years! Sometimes I can’t help myself. I had to “rescue” it before it got broken.

On the decluttering (Swedish death cleaning) side of things I am finally letting go of my vintage black leather pants! I haven’t been able to wear them for years and frankly, I’m not likely to be able to fit them again. But they are in great condition so I added them to my Etsy store.

Well, it’s time to get back to my trip prep. Really need to figure out what clothes to bring!

Wishing you happy hunting,

Karen

  1. The mountains of TN and NC were hard hit by the hurricane. I hope your dad and brother are ok and you will be able to get in and out. Many roads impassable.
