Christmas was three days ago and mine was low key and lovely. Our two daughters came over and my eldest brought her recently acquired Silken Windhound Lola. And we were all pleased when the demure and shy Lola chose to sit next to one of us and we could lavish her with pets and endearments! Besides having a fun time opening presents and eating too much good food we spoke to family scattered across the U.S. Later there was a walk and it seemed that much of our neighborhood was out walking too!
The day wound down watching a favorite TV show together and packing up leftovers for our girls to take back to their condo. After they left I sat alone in our darkened living room with just the Christmas tree lights on (which always feels magical) and felt content. Beautifully content.
But Christmas always brings sadness too for all the family members who are now gone. So many. And at some point in the holiday season I will allow myself a “good cry” letting the grief out, but Christmas night was not the time. That night I just wanted to feel grateful.
Then there always come that moment in January when you realize it’s time to take everything down and put all the decorations away and the house looks so naked and boring! (Or is that just me???!)
I’m already thinking about ways to switch up the decor. Maybe move some artwork around. Pull some pieces out of my store stock. Change what’s on our mantel. Maybe buy a big Norfolk island pine to add a bit of greenery. Not sure. But that’s a project for 2025!
Would love to hear about your holidays.

I always enjoy your writings, Karen, & today I’m happy to hear about your low-key, lovely Christmas with your daughters. Thank you! I want to tell you of our most wonderful surprise visit. Five min. before our Christmas Eve service was to start, I looked across the full sanctuary & saw a young man waving to me! Tavin, our grandson!! Larissa quickly came over to give me a hug & kiss. She, Matthew & Tavin were HERE!! I was blown away & overjoyed. And so was Gaylord when he got home from work! Pizza & talking filled up the evening until they went over to visit Heather & family. (She knew they were coming.) The next day, after checking out of their resort spot, they came over with tons of good food to fix for dinner! So our Christmas turned out to be the opposite of quiet. They gave us a blessing we’ll never forget! Tavin graduates this spring & I hope to go to his big day in LaGrange WY with Matt & Larissa.
Happy New Year, dear friend!
