As vintage sellers we often have specialisms–niche areas that we know reasonably well and look for. And there are other areas we avoid–for me that’s generally vintage video games, electronics, LPs, shoes and surprisingly, most colored glass.
For years I have heard other sellers wax lyrical about pieces, tossing around names like Hazel Atlas, L.E. Smith and Fenton. And I have never jumped on that bandwagon. Ever. I figured there were enough folks buying and selling that stuff.
But then I spotted this chunky, lidded glass compote at my neighborhood thrift store and had a “hold the phone” moment. Literally! Because I did a quick Google image lookup and it turns out this is likely a thumbprint Fenton piece. Kinda pretty, but gosh it was heavy and glass. Did I want to ship this? Still in the end I knew I had to buy it.
According to Replacements.com the color is called “Colonial Pink” and this is their lidded anniversary bowl made from 1960 – 1980.
Here’s a tiny portion of a Fenton catalog I found online.
Mine is in beautiful condition, not common and it turns out it was a good buy! (Paid $11.19, will list for $90.)
Now should I start learning more about vintage pressed glass and makers? Should I actively start looking for pieces? I’m not 100% convinced, still it could be fun learning about a new area. Hmmm.
Wishing you happy hunting,
Karen
