A Nice Find and the Healing Power of Nature

I was the first customer in my neighborhood thrift store today and discovered they had finally removed almost all of the Halloween stuff (thank goodness, I was tired of seeing the severed hands and ghoulish nonsense) and have now populated these shelves with Christmas decor. Alas most of what I saw today was not vintage or that interesting. Strings of lights and tatty stockings and such. Still at some point I am hoping to find baby Jesus and vintage glass ornaments.

In the end today I did find four small cut crystal cordial glasses that were just charming with starburst and pinwheel cuts. These are mid-century European, likely Nachtmann, a German company founded in 1834, though I have not been able to find this particular pattern.

Not wildly valuable, but nice things (will list the four for $48). Perfect for the upcoming holidays and that much-needed drop of Cointreau (a delicious orange liqueur)–which is a perfect digestif after you’ve eaten a tad too much. Trust me!

But I will admit this past week I’ve been down in the dumps. Nothing serious. Just letting small things affect me too much and I found myself ruminating more than usual.

So this afternoon I took myself outside on this warm sunny fall day to get a dose of vitamin D. I listened to the birds and watched a couple of small lizards scurry around. And I realized it had been weeks since I had last done that–just sat outside to enjoy nature.

And instead of thinking about those silly little annoyances I reflected on all the good things in my life–which are manifold–and I started feeling lighter and in a better frame of mind. And thankful.

So this is just a reminder to myself (and you) to step back now and then. Get outside. Breathe and be thankful.
