Christmas-in-July Sale?

I’ve never had a Christmas-in-July sale or even thought about it, but with the summer temps rising it’s rather pleasant thinking about that cooler time of year. Of course even stranger to me than running a Christmas-in-July sale is the realization that some big stores start setting up their Christmas displays in August!! Last September I watched YouTuber “London Visited” as he toured the Christmas departments in stores like Harrods, Liberty and Fortnum & Mason. It seemed crazy to me to have stuff out that early, but by golly, folks were buying and I was happy watching these videos!

So I decided to put all my Etsy Christmas stuff on sale through July though I don’t have that much to offer. Not for lack of trying. I just don’t find that many vintage pieces worth buying. In most of the nearby thrift stores, holiday decor is not on offer all year round. You may get the occasional piece on the shelves but not much.

The hot pink 1960s Shiny Brites (above) represent the last box of four that I bought several years ago. These were a rather exciting Goodwill find as was this glass clip-on bird found in a baggie with other vintage ornaments. I was thrilled to see that his beak remained unbroken and he had his original tail. We’ve been enjoying him on our tree the last few years and I haven’t added him to my store yet.

Surprisingly I sell a fair number of nativity pieces. Not whole sets, just random pieces. I am particularly fond of the plaster wise men made in Italy. I sold this fine fellow years ago ($14) and rather miss him! Before he sold he was nestled in a candlestick “forest” on our mantel.

Well, I hope you haven’t been totally put off by thinking about Christmas…in July!! It is a strange thing.

Happy hunting,

Karen

  1. I love those birds! My parents had one, and it was my favorite ornament. I think my mother must have throw it out. I found a couple at St. Vincent de Paul’s last year. Left the one without a clip, but a tail, and left the one with a clip and no tail. Should have bought them both and used the tail! Hindsight. You know those aluminum trees with the branches that stick into the center trunk? I found one, in the box, branches all in their sleeves, in the Goodwill Bins! I’m not a reseller, but I sold it! You’ve gotten my excited for holiday thrifting! I found a bunch of Putz houses last year, and tiny ones for the tree.

    1. Hi Gabriella. I was so excited to find this one. I don’t have any ornaments from my childhood. After my mother died (over 20 years ago now), my dad either tossed or gave away all the ornaments without telling any of us kids. I know there were some we all would have liked. 😩

      1. unfortunately sometimes people are reckless towards family “possessions”, maybe they were in stress, who knows, but cherished items / memories end up in the bin. We had a stash of wonderful old Christmas decorations, I think they’re lost. At least I have some old photos of those Christmas πŸ™‚
