The Last Week of July…

I’m glad July is almost over. It’s not my favorite month for a slew of reasons. Not least it’s historically my worst sales month of the year, as it is for many of us in the biz. Things are still being “favorited” and put in carts, but not as many folks are following through and buying. (And strangely I realized the last few months I’ve been doing the same thing on other sites!)

But on a more positive note, I realized this month I found quite a few really good things. My favorites are the UK anatomy manuals (library book sale), the Victorian glass and sterling match holder/striker (Goodwill), the Enid Collins purse (Goodwill) and the chunky continental silver Grand Tour charm bracelet (eBay). Two of these are in carts, but I’m not holding my breath!

Then on Monday I had a few boxes of items to donate to Goodwill. Most were things my daughters had decided not to take with them and no longer wanted. So afterwards I gave the store a good rummage. And you know how it is–junk, junk, brand new, too expensive, too expensive, broken, junk. I had actually taken a small cart and it stayed empty.

Until…

I walked past these several times before I took a closer look at the bottom shelf. There were four saucers and teacups rubber banded and zip tied in an awkward fashion. (I wish they wouldn’t do this! Makes them hard to examine and easy to get broken.)

Were these anything? Hmmm….

Hold the phone. They were 1983 Royal Doulton English porcelain cups and saucers in the charming Brambly Hedge Four Seasons patterns. At checkout I asked the salesclerk if he could cut all the rubber bands and ties so I could look at each piece singly. And he was happy to do that. Each piece seemed to be in perfect condition. Yeah!!

Not my kind of thing, but darn cute. Current listing prices are all over the place, but most trend around $40-$75 a cup/saucer. Some are asking $200 for one cup and saucer though I haven’t seen any solds even close to that price! Wishful thinking?? I will likely list the four as a set around $180.

And the month will end delightfully with a lunch date with my dear friend JoDee and our street’s annual potluck block party. We haven’t had a block party since 2019 thanks to the pandemic and we’ve all missed it.

I’ll close for now wishing you happy hunting,

Karen

  1. I always wonder when I see an item in several carts! I removed things from mine when I change my mind. I worry I’ll click the wrong button and buy it if I leave it there!
No, those cups aren’t my thing either, but are adorable. How nice all four were there, and in good condition.
Charm bracelets are so… pardon… charming. I don’t wear bracelets, but charms are little works of art. I’d have them displayed somehow. Is one of those a peeing boy?
How nice to have block parties. I’ve never lived anywhere that did that.

    1. Hi Lisa. The cups were a lucky find…hopefully they will find a new home!
I adore charm bracelets and will likely wear this bracelet a bit before it sells. (The little peeing boy is a statue in Brussels.)
Our street started doing block parties about 17 years ago or so. It’s been a lovely, fun way to connect. Though sadly some folks won’t ever come.
      Ta,
