Rethinking My Vintage Biz for 2025

Karen's avatarPosted by

Sales are down this 4th quarter for many online vintage sellers, which is so atypical–usually this is our busiest time of year. And gosh Christmas is only five weeks away!!! But equally strange, though my sales have been down, more of my expensive antiques have sold so my November revenue is okay.

But both these facts are causing me to have a bit of a “rethink.”

I believe 2025 in the U.S., with tariffs on the horizon for certain products, reductions planned for social security benefits and other economic factors in play, many folks will have less disposable money. There’s going to be some belt-tightening. Like many I sell the extras in life, the flufferies, the bits and bobs. And let’s be real, no one needs a duck figurine, a lacquer box, or a crystal dish.

So I’m reconsidering my current and future inventory and frankly my biz as a whole.

  • First, I’ve started trying to sell things locally on Nextdoor and FB Marketplace. I’ll make less profit, but won’t have to deal with shipping or fees. (We’ll see if I get any traction.)
  • Second, I may (and I say this hesitantly) have a yard/estate sale at some point to downsize my excess inventory. Maybe. Or potentially I could sign up for a spot at our local flea market one month. But I really wouldn’t want to do that alone.
  • Third, I am going to be donating more of my stock. There are things that just need to go. I didn’t pay much for them and they’ve been sitting for too long.
  • Fourth, I need to be more discerning about future purchases. I want higher-end pieces. Much harder to find and more $$ investment, but should be worth it in the end.

I know I’ve written about this multiple times, but 2025 is the year I need to make changes. I still love this biz. I love vintage and antique things. But I have to be realistic, sales are slowing down, I’m running out of storage space and I’m getting old. Fact!

Wishing you health and happiness,

Karen

  1. Karen, I love your blog and posts and have followed you for years. I have rented booth space in both an antique mall and a craft mall for the past 16 years. Actually, I gave up the antique mall spot in 2023, but suddenly this year (I turned 70 in April, but still in good health!), I decided to retire from the business, so am closing my booth in the craft mall at the end of the year. I was just tired of trying to second guess what people want to buy. Don’t want to deal with it anymore…although I do have some bins packed for “future Etsy or Ebay sales”, even though I have ZERO interest in selling on-line. Sometimes, it’s hard to let go, lol! My husband and I are planning on having a garage sale in the spring to let go of a lot of our stuff and the rest will be donated. Best of luck to you getting 2025 figured out. I will continue to read and learn from you!

    1. Hi Linda. Thank you for being a long-time reader. That means a lot to me.

I have to admit after 12+ years selling online, I am getting weary of it. It is a lot of work and now with fewer sales it feels like I’m spinning my wheels.

Will keep you posted on how things go.

  2. Spot on, Karen!…And for all the reasons that you stated, I think that sales of your collectables, will probably decline even further. It’s distressing…Working harder for less ie It’s work to list stuff, that just sits and doesn’t sell! Please report back how Nextdoor & Marketplace go, for you.

I have also sold some more expensive items, in the past month…$360 Unused Waterford Vase, $300 antique perfume bottle & $145 blown glass Christmas ornament.

PS I cannot reply below your post, as I used to do…It makes me jump through too many hoops, So I have resorted to emailing you instead.

All the best to you, Liz Keister

    1. Hi Liz. I’m glad some of your more expensive items sold too! They sound fantastic. Were these estate sale finds??

I have no great hopes for Nextdoor and FB Marketplace. I have tried them in the best and it wasn’t that successful for me. Still I figured I’d give it a try again. Will keep you posted on how it goes!

Trying not to be discouraged, but I am not optimistic about 2025.

  3. Hi Karen, sales have been slow for us as well at the antique store. However, we did well in November.

I’m not much of an online seller, but I have sold on both FB and Nextdoor. Both are a pain, but I’ve had some success and met some really great people. I’m interested in maybe doing a vintage flea market/fair next year. It depends on how well I feel. But I’m not giving up my booth until it’s really necessary. I enjoy it too much!

Wishing you luck for next year!

    Take care,

    Patricia

    1. Hi Patricia. Glad you had a good November in your booth. November turned out okay for me too because a couple of more my valuable items sold. So far FB Marketplace and Nextdoor have been a bust.

Here’s hoping our sales pick up this month!

      Hugs,

      Karen

  4. I’m in the UK and the same exact thoughts and process, carry less stock, reduce overheads and time, and take higher turnover per item. I think it is simply appealing to those with spare money and they will be more discerning. I think the lower end of the market is over: Warren Buffet clearing out his stocks last year should have been a full warning. But maybe vintage and antiques is a dreamers business – when we look at yesteryear; tell me anybody in this trade who didn’t want to live in the 1960’s or 1860’s. Good luck to all.

  5. Thanks for your comment Samuel. So far 2025 has been a tough year for my Etsy store. I am continuing to try and downsize my inventory and focus on the really good stuff. Best of luck to you.
