I stopped into my neighborhood thrift store the other day and I really wanted to buy something. I wanted an epic find–something fantastic to share with you and put in my Etsy store.
And I was tempted by this pair of brass vases with interesting etching/overlay. They were big and lovely though not my kind of thing. (A little too fussy. Almost gaudy.) Plus they looked and felt like they were made yesterday and at $34 for the pair I just wasn’t sure. Yes, I could make money with them, absolutely, but I just wasn’t “feeling” them for me or my store. And at this point in my vintage career I am leaning more into my gut feelings. I had to leave them behind.
But this vintage brass pot that I bought earlier this year ticked boxes for me that these two vases didn’t. It’s vintage and heavy and I really liked its shape and the primitive etchings. And to me it just felt like a good thing. (I like this so much I have it on my mantel right now.)
And that’s where I’m headed now. If I’m going to buy something to resell I have to feel drawn to it!
On a different note, years ago I used to have this wonderful group of Goodwill thrifting friends–Patty, John-Jerome and Mikey. We’d see each other Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. and gradually got to talking. And it was lovely. We learned a bit about each others’ lives and passions. Then the covid pandemic hit and I never saw Patty again and only saw John-Jerome and Mikey a few times afterwards. Now not for years. And I’ve missed our brief interactions and have wondered how they are doing.
Then I made a new thrifting friend about a year ago. He and his wife are not resellers but enjoy finding treasures and whenever we see each other at the store we gab for a while! I’ve learned about some of his collecting passions.
Well today he surprised me and said he had a box of stuff for me if I’d like it. Wow. How sweet is that? Turns out it was a box of vintage cordial glasses in different patterns.
None wildly valuable, but so cool and all mid century or earlier. They made me wish I had a life where I needed cocktail glasses. Of all the glasses in the box I’m going to put these six in a group because they seem so sympatico! Two are Bryce Ringmont glasses, two Federal Glass in the Optic Rippled pattern and two possibly older French glasses with a worn gold rim. They are all perfect for a bit of limoncello, Cointreau or creme de menthe.

They are ideal for someone who entertains and are perfectly charming.
I’ve listed this special lot for $58.
So while I walked out of the store empty handed, my hands didn’t stay empty for long thanks to a thrifting friend and I went home feeling blessed.
Wishing you happy hunting,
Karen
